At Maven Photo + Film, we believe adventure isn’t just something you do, it’s something you capture. So when 352 Preview asked us to film something unforgettable for their Father’s Day issue, we grabbed our gear and pointed the lens toward something a little more… toothy.
We went shark diving.
For real. No cages, no scuba tanks, no stunt doubles. Just snorkels, open ocean, and a few dozen curious sharks. This wasn’t just a thrill-seeking bucket list item, it was a chance to do what we do best: tell bold stories through photo and film, in the heart of the action.
The Assignment: Show Something Epic for Father’s Day
For 352 Preview’s June issue focused on cool things to do with or for Dad, we wanted something that went beyond the backyard BBQ. We drove to Jupiter, Florida, to film with Florida Shark Diving, a charter experience that puts you right in the water, face to fin, with sharks.
They only take 3–4 guests per trip, and no experience is required. It’s designed for anyone with a sense of adventure and a willingness to slide off a boat into wild, blue water.
Our Element: Real Adventure, Real Stories
At Maven, we specialize in filming in unpredictable environments—from disaster drills to remote summits—and this trip pushed all the right buttons. Our team has documented expeditions on four continents, so we’re used to hauling gear through jungles, deserts, and alpine trails. But floating above a dozen sharks in open water? That was new.
And exactly the kind of setting we live for.
Our goal wasn’t just to document the experience—it was to immerse viewers in it. That meant waterproof housings, strategic positioning, and rolling film the second our feet hit the deck. It’s one thing to snorkel with sharks. It’s another to keep your frame clean while one glides right beneath you.
Sharks, Cameras, and a Whole Lot of Respect
Once we anchored and suited up, the crew gave us a full safety briefing. These sharks aren’t caged or baited aggressively. They’re wild, elegant, and inquisitive—and when treated with respect, they make for the most incredible subjects we’ve ever filmed underwater.
Within moments of entering the water, we were surrounded by silky sharks and sandbars. Some came within arm’s reach. And while that may sound terrifying, the truth is—it was peaceful. Controlled. Beautiful, even.
That’s the story we set out to tell. Not just the adrenaline rush, but the quiet awe of sharing space with wild creatures most people only ever see on TV.
